Potential Self

You are not what you are. You are what you’re capable of being.

I challenge you to discard any negative notions you may have about yourself right now. You are living in an undeveloped snapshot of time and existence. Whatever you consider to be your shortcomings, don’t have to continue to be tomorrow.

In an ideal world, everyone would be treated like their potential selves, not just how they currently are. I try to see that potential in others as often as I can, and I do my best to speak life and possibility into anyone I encounter. Of course I’m not 100% successful, but I do know how much better it feels for everyone when I try.

“Sometimes, the greatest challenge is to see that potential in ourselves.”
— Ish Holmes

Sometimes, the greatest challenge is to see that potential in ourselves; especially during times of heartache and hardship. I like to think of babies whenever I need a reminder of optimism and faith.

Babies are so fascinating to me. They aren’t weighed down by limited thinking, societal pressures and irrational fear. They were born from infinity, and if you look closely, you can still see the universe in their eyes.

So, when they’re learning to crawl, they aren’t sad or frustrated by their inability to walk. They are happy and hopeful! They are energized by their potential. They know that gift will soon be developed, and they revel in their learning. Even as they stumble and fail at their initial attempts to stride, they laugh at their mistakes. They find humor and humility in their blunders, and they don’t ever try to rush the process.

If you’re unfulfilled or unsatisfied with your life, and you’re not sure how to turn things around, start by trying your best at whatever you’re doing now. Give it your all. No matter what your job is, no matter how much you dislike it, doing it as well as you possibly can will add so much more meaning and dignity to it.

You giving yourself anything less than what you’re capable of will only add to your negative feelings and perception of yourself, and you’ll run the risk of spiraling into a chain of unfavorable manifestations. Operating with excellence is a worthy value of any man or woman, and it will serve as a deep foundation for your future self to grow from.
